Editor's Note

The authors of Feigelson et al. (1) thank Dr. Mia M. Gaudet and colleagues for their interest in their article. Data from two large studies provided by Gaudet and colleagues1 agree with the overall null findings of Feigelson and colleagues, but do not confirm their reported association of HSD17B1 variation and ER-negative breast cancer. These data reinforce their concern that the ER-negative findings may reflect chance.

Feigelson and colleagues recently discovered an error in their database that affected a single cohort (The Women's Health Study) and accounted for approximately 13% of the data in the published article. They have now corrected the error and completely re-analyzed the data. They are reassured that the corrected analysis minimally changes their effect estimates and does not alter their conclusions. Table 1 shows the corrected data for the association between HSD17B1 and invasive breast cancer among U.S. Caucasian women by estrogen receptor status.
