About the Cover

Cover Figure

President George H. W. Bush is honored on our cover as an active and outspoken supporter for the advancement of cancer research. President and Mrs. Bush lost a child to leukemia many years ago. After this personal tragedy, they created the Bright Star Foundation, which is devoted to providing funds for leukemia research, and began their life-long commitment to the fight against cancer.

During his Presidency, Mr. Bush was a strong supporter of the National Cancer Institute, and since leaving office, cancer research has remained a top priority for both President and Mrs. Bush. President Bush serves as chairman of the Board of Visitors at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and he and Mrs. Bush are Co-Chairs of the National Dialogue on Cancer, a forum that brings together leaders of key national cancer organizations and figures from other public, private, and non-profit entities with a common goal of eliminating cancer as a major health problem at the earliest possible time.

President Bush has made major contributions to cancer awareness. Of particular note was his address in October 2001 to dignitaries and guests at the AACR-EORTC "One World, One Quest" Gala in Chicago. The Gala was the first international collaborative event sponsored by the AACR Foundation for the Prevention and Cure of Cancer and the Foundation of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (the EORTC/USA Foundation). President Bush was eloquent in his speech to those assembled for the event: "Cancer is an international epidemic that knows no borders, singles out no race, and pays no attention to politics. Finding a cure for cancer is a job for the whole of humankind. We must win the war against cancer, but this can only happen if we work together. Only then can our dream of a cancer-free world become a reality."

On behalf of cancer researchers, survivors, and those affected by cancer around the world, we express our gratitude to President Bush for his dedication to the conquest of cancer.
