Effect of 1,25-D3 treatment on SCC growth in syngeneic C3H mice

At day 14 after implantation of 5 × 105 SCC cells, tumor-bearing C3H/HeJ mice were randomized into three groups (8–10 animals/group) and then treated with either saline, 0.75 μg of 1,25-D3 daily for 3 days (D × 3), or a single injection of 2.25 μg of 1,25-D3 (D × 1). Tumor volumes (volume = width2 × length/2) were recorded before treatment (initial tumor volume) and 24 h after the final administration of saline or 1,25-D3 (final tumor volume). Fractional tumor volumes were calculated using the equation: fractional tumor volume = final tumor volume/initial tumor volume. The differences in fractional tumor volumes among the various treatment groups were found to be statistically significant by ANOVA (saline versus D × 3, P < 10−6; saline versus D × 1, P = 1 × 10−5; D × 3 versus D × 1, P = 0.001).
